The film features Joanne Arnow’s real-life parents, playing Anna’s parents
Narrative
A mosaic-style comedy that follows a woman’s life as time passes through her long-term casual BDSM relationship, a lowly corporate job, and a bickering Jewish family..
What a surprise!
The second film by the very talented Joanne Arnow (she edited, wrote, directed and starred in the film) is a symphony of ambient shame, with movements centered around the various men with whom Ann, the protagonist, has varying lengths and ambivalent relationships with .
Extremely original, sharp-witted, true and witty
She manages to hit a range of painful notes in these movements, from ritualized abjection of sensual humiliation to cutting corporate humiliations.
I loved how the overtly sexual material contrasted with the visual aesthetic; it gave me the impression of a woman’s gaze at work
In more than 50 years of watching movies and writing reviews, it’s time to say: I’ve never seen a movie like this and truly enjoyed it.
Check it out if you enjoy subtle character development and deadpan humor…
